Sustainability in the Workplace

Xiomara Olaya

Sustainability has become a topic of discussion in the workplace worldwide. Businesses are “going green” by making many small, yet powerful changes in their space and amongst themselves. But what exactly is sustainability and how can you join this powerful movement? Sustainability is based on the principle that everything that we need for survival and general well-being depends on our natural environment. The idea of it is to create and maintain a balanced coexistence between humans and nature. In fact, The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 states that “to create and maintain conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations.” There are many ways that your business can transition into a more conscious and sustainable work environment.

At Collective Ventures, we have created a conscious corporate culture amongst our members, staff, and customers by incorporating an active recycling program to reduce single-use plastic and to conserve electricity. We switched half of our lights from incandescent and fluorescent to LED and we plan to change the remaining this year. Our members contribute by turning off their lights and equipment during off hours or days that they are not in the office. This year at Cafe Collective, we switched our plates, cups and straws from plastic to compostable and reusable brands. We began to reuse our coffee compost to fertilize the soil and plant fruits for next season, and will be offering it to the members of the community in hopes that they to, reuse it for next season!

We are kicking off Earth Day Week on April 13th by partnering with the Fort Lauderdale Beach Sweep group to clean the beach with our members and locals from 9-11 AM. We will be collecting donations throughout the entire month for the Sierra Club Foundation, a non-profit environmentalist organization. The organization’s stated mission is to “help educate, inspire empower humanity to preserve the natural and human environment.”

Come in on Earth Day between 8-12 to receive 20% off your entire order!
